About Guy Algar

Guy Algar is a mechanical engineer. He currently owns and operates a specialty shop for classic cars and muscle cars in South Central Texas. He also provides contract work as a mechanical design engineer through his design company, Scorpio Design Services.

Motorheads Performance was the dream of Guy Algar since he was a teenager working on street rods with his group of friends who were all into fast cars. Guy went on to study and work in the mechanical engineering field for over 25 years. He has worked on designing projects ranging from vacuum machinery used in gold plating ... to space simulation chambers in use on NASA projects. Being a mechanical engineer means Guy has specific training in the mechanical workings of engines. This helps him troubleshoot elusive problems when working with classic cars and trucks, and is a training beyond what most mechanics receive.

Guy has owned his 1955 two door Belair Sedan since he was 16 years old. Over the years, he has built 3 engines, 2 transmissions, upgraded carburetors, cam shafts and ignition systems to improve her performance and power. He also owns several classic trucks. He has been working on classic cars for over 35 years, and has received inspiration, guidance and instruction from others passionate about their cars. As a young man, he was fortunate enough to work on a project with a hot rodding legend Red McMillan. He has been an avid drag racer, at one time participating in a team of regular racers. His shifting skills in drag racing led to trophies and a tempting offer to join a race team as a driver. He also enjoys cruises in his Belair.

Guy's Qualifications

Guy Algar has been Founder and Shop Manager of Motorheads Performance for over 8 years. There are no specific "certifications" for those of us specializing in classic cars. Most of the top names in our industry have had little if any "formal" training. Many are self taught over the years, learned on-the-job, or learned by watching and working with mentors. Many were born with a gift of mechanical understanding. The thing most share in common is a passion for what they do.

Although not necessary, nor standard in the field of classic car repair, Guy Algar holds 5 ASE Certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). He first held certification in 1988, and has passionately pursued knowledge and expertise in this field for many years.

Guy Algar is also a Mechanical Engineer with over 25 years of design, installation and troubleshooting experience. *Mechanical Engineering applies the principles of physics and materials science in the analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and materials science and structural analysis (*source Wikipedia). Mechanical engineers use these principles to design and analyze motor vehicles, engines, aircraft, heating and cooling systems and more. Guy has designed, installed and maintained many types of engines and mechanical products. His engineering knowledge led him to specialty work in vacuum processing, nuclear power, and on space simulation chambers in use on NASA projects.
