Woman Scares Off Car Thieves With Her Finger - And Other Recovery Attempts

Yes, news went viral last week about a woman cleverly recovered her own stolen car which had been missing for five days. It's always a good feeling when the "good guys" get the upper hand on the "bad guys", but was the risky maneuver something we should attempt?

Seeing her own stolen car in a parking lot, the 50 year old woman from Washington (state) went up to the alleged thieves and demanded that they give her the keys. When they refused, she grabbed one of the men and as she did so, stuck her finger in the back of one, saying she would shoot if he didn't turn over the keys! 

While the bluff did work, and the suspects were apprehended by police, it is generally not a good idea to confront suspected thieves. This woman is lucky that her bluff worked for her.

A 2010 story out of the UK ended quite badly when a 42 year old woman who confronted her alleged thief was run over and killed. There are other tragic stories with similar bad endings if you take the time to look, but every now and then you hear stories where car owners fight back to protect their rides.

Meanwhile, right here in Texas, a car thief was stopped while attempting to steal an SUV from in front of a home in an affluent area of San Antonio. This time the gun was real and the consequences were deadly. In January 2013 the two alleged thieves were brought down by the vehicle owner, with one being injured, the other dying from the gunshot he received. No charges were brought against the vehicle owner since he was protecting his property while the crime was being committed.

The bottom line is you need to assess every situation individually. Guy Algar states, "While we don't recommend taking matters into your own hands, sometimes circumstances force us to do so. We always urge you to first contact the police by calling 9-1-1." As we've discussed in our classic car theft prevention series, "Keeping Your Ride Safe", it's always a wise idea to consider how you would react in  various situations, rehearse what you would do and prepare yourself for a variety of potential outcomes in order to ensure your own safety as well.

Spring Break In Texas Means More Inexperienced And Distracted Drivers On The Road

It's spring break time here in Texas, and with it we see our youth heading out to popular vacation spots to celebrate breaks in their school year. That can mean more inexperienced drivers, distracted drivers, and typically even more inebriated drivers.  A bad mix for the roadways.

Many spring breakers head out to parties on the coast, New Orleans, or even a drive to Mexican hot-spots. All this can lead to trouble with more drivers on the road and even more thieves willing to take advantage. We encourage homeowners who will be away to secure your home, secure your vehicles, and stay alert while driving.

If you've got kids who are planning a getaway, make sure you've discussed the rules of safety in numbers, risks of carrying cash, driving with a designated sober driver and/or plans to hire a ride home after a night of partying. Here are some tips:

• Plan your trip in advance
• Make reservations for your accommodations
• Be wary of overly friendly people
• Keep political opinion to yourself
• Don't look like a tourist
• Don't act like a tourist
• Speak the local language if you know it
• Stick to well-lit, populated areas

And, more specific to a day/night out partying:

• Travel in groups and stick together
• Don't go out with cash
• Don't carry purses/wallets
• Have one person pay for the night's activities on a credit card (divide it up later)
• Watch your drinking - have a few drinks but don't overdo it
• Have someone in your group stay sober or limit their drinking
• Have a designated "mother" who will keep everyone safe
• Don't drink and drive

Guy Algar explains, "We've all grown up having our fair share of parties and fun. What's different for today's youth are all the distractions that surround you while you drive. We didn't have cell phones, smart phones and iPads and vehicles that are equipped with technology that allows you to text and post to Facebook or Twitter while you drive. Couple that with driving when you've been out drinking and it's a formula for disaster." Our children have grown up with these technologies and don't see how distracting they can be.

Could VIN Cloning Affect The Classic Car Market?

The disturbing new trend of criminals cloning VIN numbers is growing, and it is producing a frustrating number of problems for legitimate car owners nationwide. Could you become victim of an "illegal twin" to your ride?

If you're not aware of the new method of VIN cloning, you won't be for long. It's on the rise, and is currently used to copy VIN numbers off of legitimate cars that are left in parking lots or other easily accessible public places. The numbers are then used to register stolen vehicles. These newly cloned vehicles can then be used recklessly by the criminals, leaving you holding the bag for speeding tickets or accidents, used to commit a crime, or even to sell the "hot" car for pure profit.

You would be totally unaware that a crime has occurred until you begin receiving parking tickets, speeding tickets, a summons to appear in court, or even arrested for suspicion of involvement in a crime. The consequences can be costly, embarrassing and time-consuming. And, it's happening all over the country.

The FBI broke up a cloning ring in 2009 that had cloned 1,000 stolen cars worth approximately 25 million dollars.  Used car buyers can be duped into receiving stolen property if the VIN of their new purchase turns out to have been cloned. Even though you were unaware that it was a stolen car that had been tampered with, you may find yourself out of a vehicle that you still must make payments on!

In our monthly series, "Keeping Our Rides Safe", our focus is to try to prevent theft of our beloved classic cars, muscle cars and old vintage trucks. Guy Algar elaborates, "In researching this new trend of VIN cloning, we realize that there is little to prevent thieves from applying the same techniques to stolen classic cars. A visit to a car show could provide dozens or even hundreds of VIN numbers which would then be transferred to similar stolen cars, and the owner would be unaware that any type of crime has occurred." It's a frightening thought.

Guy Algar continues, "The rules of theft prevention are sometimes so simple we don't routinely follow them. We're easily lulled into a false sense of security when we're at a car show, a swap meet, or places that are known to be relatively safe. With VIN cloning, we need to be even more aware than ever before."

• Insurance Protection
• Do-it-Yourself Theft Deterrents
• Alarms
• Locks
• Car Theft Systems
• Cameras / Video
• Tracking & Recovery Systems

If you're in the market for purchasing a used classic, take the time to check the VIN plate for any signs of tampering such as scratches or alterations to any of the letters or numbers. Try to perform a check of the vehicle's history to make sure that the facts add up. And, be wary if the deals seems to be too good to be true. Thieves who have cloned VIN numbers often sell below market value in order to turn a quick profit.

If you suspect that a newly purchased classic car, muscle car, street rod, antique car or vintage truck may have been cloned because you've started receiving tickets, contact your local police department who can help determine if it is using another vehicle's VIN number.

Fully Chromed Corvette is Dazzling Sight To See!

I have to admit, I've always been a fan of chrome. Not overdone, because I think it can be, but just nicely decked out chrome in an engine compartment is exciting to see. Many people are attracted to chrome, and for one person, that meant finishing the entire car body in brilliant chrome!

Yes, the Lithuanian owner of this C6 Corvette had his ride chromed out with one of the new vivid vinyl wraps available in a wide range of eye-popping colors including chrome! (More about the trendy fad of wrapping in an upcoming article.) While this 'Vette isn't even available to buy in Lithuania, the owner is sure going to get a LOT of attention driving there with his attention-grabbing ride.

Love it or hate it, this car screams, "Look at me" at the top of it's lungs (and speaking of lungs, aren't you wondering just what he may have added under the hood!) His biggest problem, aside from fending off those who would love to stick this Corvette in their garage, is keeping the RPM's in check so the police don't have any more reason to pull him over!

Update On I-10 Driver Exceeding 135 mph Caught, Arrested And Facing Multiple Charges

Yesterday, I had referenced a local story about a driver involved in a high speed chase on Eastbound I-10 in Gonzales County, Texas. Today, there is an update to the story, and a 24 year old San Antonio woman is in custody and being held on a range of charges.

It has been reported that law enforcement officials from at least four counties along Interstate 10 came together to catch a woman who had been clocked doing speeds up to 135 mph, weaving in and out of traffic, using the shoulder at 110 mph, as well as exiting and re-entering the Interstate in attempt to allude officials. Initial reports that stop sticks were not used was updated with reports that Flatonia police did deploy stop sticks, but the driver was able to successfully avoid them. Also first reported as a black Honda Accord, more recent reports identify the vehicle as a Nissan Maxima stolen out of San Antonio.

In a strange stroke of luck, Ugonna Helen Nwogu, 24, of San Antonio, stopped at the same gas station as a Guadalupe County Trooper involved in the original pursuit. The Maxima rammed a parked car and re-entered the highway, but was apprehended on I-10 about a mile later.

"Nwogu is being held in Seguin on $78,500 in bond facing charges for evading arrest, unauthorized use of a vehicle, an accident involving damage to another vehicle, possession of marijuana (less than 2 oz.) and driving while intoxicated," reported the Gonzales Inquirer.

Some Drivers Just Love To Drive FAST Others Are Evading The Law

Texas has some of the highest speed limits in the country, with many portions of Interstate I-10 having 75mph posted speeds. But this apparently isn't fast enough for some drivers, as was evidenced around 6:45 pm Sunday night along a strip of I-10 in Gonzales County, where Motorheads Performance is located.

No, it wasn't one of the muscle cars we've upgraded with performance parts! It was an unidentified driver of a black Honda Accord. While speeds reportedly reached 135 mph, law enforcement officials from several counties frantically attempted to apprehend the driver. Their efforts were apparently unsuccessful as the evading driver skillfully outmaneuvered officials and alluded capture. As the driver passed into abutting counties on the eastbound lanes of I-10, the driver was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic, using the shoulder, as well as exiting and re-entering the Interstate. Stop sticks were not used, as fear of injury to innocent drivers kept officials from deploying them.

It is unknown why this driver was evading law enforcement officials, and it is not known whether the driver was ever captured. It does cause you to take pause, however. You could be innocently driving along a highway when you encounter a wreckless driver. What do you do? How would you react if a vehicle was weaving through lanes at dangerous speeds?

It also is good cause to pause and remember that public streets are not the place to vent your "need for speed". Remember, in Texas we're fortunate to have a number of great places where even street drivers are able to hop on a track for a few passes down the drag strip. Whether you've got need to satisfy your desire to challenge someone in a grudge match, or just want to see what you're ride is capable of, there are venues to flex your muscle safely and affordably. Guy Algar and I encourage you to visit an area raceway instead of engaging in illegal street racing. Try a day or night of fun at the San Antonio Raceway, or others across our state.

Storms And Extremes In Weather Affect Classic Car Industry

There's no doubt that 2013 has started with a bang in terms of wild weather patterns across the United States. While some may argue the cause and whether it's all due to global warming or not, those of us affiliated with the classic car industry in certain areas of the country have seen a slowdown of activity, and it's not all financially motivated.

What Guy Algar and I are hearing from callers across the country are stories of having to "wait for the weather to clear," before starting up or continuing a planned restoration project. We've also seen delays in part shipments which can really throw off a schedule. Huge amounts of snow has hit the Midwest and Northeast in the last couple of weeks, and this has caused projects to come to a screeching halt for some. Anyone from Boston was mesmerized by Blizzard Nemo, with flashbacks to The Blizzard of '78, and the record amounts of snow it dropped in Connecticut and across the entire Northeast. Hurricane Sandy hitting the Northeast earlier in the year, and odd weather in just about every corner of the country has many just waiting it out.

It has been a tough winter, and in some areas we've still got quite a way to go before warmer temperatures creep back. But, I think what we'll see is a big surge of activity from owners of classic cars, muscle cars, antique cars as well as old vintage trucks. After surviving difficult years like this, it only takes a few days of warm weather to get people thinking of hitting the road again.

Luckily, here in Texas, we usually experience mild winters that don't last too long. It allows us to continue work on repairs, upgrades and restoration work on our customer cars and trucks, and to prepare for what we believe will be a very busy spring.

There's been a lot of talk about unique gifts you can give to your girlfriend or wife for Valentine's Day, but let's face it, most of them are just the same old box of chocolates, teddy bear or lingerie.  Not that there is anything at all wrong with any of these, but wouldn't you like to get extra points for something original and romantic?

Men sometimes miss the point that we don't actually mind the passion you have about the cars you love. It's often that we just feel left out of things, don't always understand "why" you love your car, and most don't understand the language. If you're ok with your woman's silly obsession with shoes, jewelry, clothes or accessories, she's capable of being tolerant of the time you spend with your ride. Showing you can involve her in an aspect of your life that is important to you at the same time you're giving her something that is thoughtful and romantic can be a win-win for all.

So why not give your best girl the chance to share what you like almost as much as her! Try a nice night out in the style of your favorite ride, whether it's your classic car, muscle car, antique car, or even your vintage truck. Take the time to think up a pretty drive route, even though it may be less direct. Dress up the event by having a destination that she'll love. Her favorite restaurant (or one she hasn't tried yet) will do just fine, but remember to get a bit dressed up so she can reciprocate and enjoy the chance to dress up special for you. Plan it right, and you'll have your chance to enjoy the lingerie later on!

Classic Car Theft Protection 101: Your Stickshift May Prevent Carjacking Or Theft!

It seems that driving a stick shift is a dying art. I've had this conversation with friends for several years now, and a story I read online today confirms what I've seen happening with teens emerging as young drivers. Many simply don't know how to drive a stick shift.

The fact that would-be carjacker's efforts were thwarted because they couldn't figure out how to operate the clutch of a Corvette is a very good thing. The Orlando, Florida man was waiting for his wife outside the Orlando Regional Medical Center at 11PM one night when a group of young men attempted the carjacking, forcing the 51 year old owner out of the car and ordering him to get on the ground. But, they couldn't figure out that they needed to punch the clutch in order to start the car, and ended up abandoning their efforts.

Meanwhile, last month a video surfaced of a daytime carjack attempt of a pickup truck where the driver didn't know how to get the manual transmission into reverse and gave up, fleeing the vehicle in frustration.

Inspired by Keeping Our Rides Safe, my series of articles on preventing vehicle theft, owning and driving a vehicle with a stick shift could very well be an excellent form of theft protection! European drivers still actively drive stick shifts, which account for over 50 percent of auto sales, but for Americans, it seems as if our move towards having everything done for us has taken over with our driving. It is estimated that less than 10 percent of Americans opt for standard drive in their vehicles. That leaves an awful lot of potential thieves who don't know the first thing about manual transmissions and how to drive them - something a lot of classic car and muscle car owners might be relieved about!

Guy Algar, co-owner of Motorheads Performance explains, "When I grew up, all of us who were into cars learned how to drive standard transmission cars. We loved driving cars with stick shifts. There was an element of skill beyond just driving. It was almost a rite of passage to most men who are now over 50. Some would argue it is more 'manly', but we always considered it to be just so much more fun. Those of us who were good at going through the gears could compete for trophies, win races at the track, and even be invited to drive for race teams. Today's youth often don't have the chance to learn to drive a stick because they're parents don't own one."

As the generations of men and women who were faithfully taught to drive manual transmission cars and trucks begin to pass on, and new generations are not taught how to drive standards, it sure looks as if stick shift driving indeed is becoming a dying "art". Certainly the joys of driving with stick shifts are foreign to most young drivers, and that's a shame.

Steve McQueen's 1951 Convertible Goes Up On Auction Block

Yes, news is that another vintage vehicle belonging to the great actor Steve McQueen is going up for sale in auction on March 22, 2013.

There's no doubt that any vehicle, whether car, motorcycle or airplane belonging to Steve McQueen will draw big bucks in any type of sale. He was know for having amassed one of the largest and most impressive collections in (and possibly even out of) Hollywood.

Even though the movie The Hunter (see official movie trailer below) was not the biggest box office hit when it released in the 1980's, the 1951 Chevrolet Styleline DeLuxe Convertible that was used in the movie will be a big seller if history repeats itself.

Guy Algar of Motorheads Performance explains, "Other Steve McQueen vehicles have certainly fetched top dollar when they've sold. The fact that McQueen reportedly loved this great old classic car and bought it after the movie's production wrapped up, and that he personally used it for four years following the movie, should help to get a great price on the car which was professionally restored 10 years ago. I've followed the sales of some of Steve McQueen's other vehicles, and in particular his rare Indian motorcycles, and the bidding is intense. It should be an interesting auction."

Rick Harrison of television's Pawn Stars is the current owner and is putting it up for auction in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with no reserve set. The vehicle comes with complete documentation including Certificate of Authenticity. Although formal appraisal estimates it's worth at $45,000 it is thought that the convertible could easily sell for 10 times that amount.

IHRA Undergoes Ownership Change Determined To Focus On Drag Racing

Big news hit today that the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has been sold. In a release from the new ownership group, IHRA Entertainment LLC, it was announced that a collaboration between the Palm Beach International Raceway and Memphis International Raceway had formed to acquire the IHRA and take over it's management from Feld Motor Sports. The IHRA has been one of the nations premiere drag racing bodies for over 43 years.

IHRA has sanctioned over 100 drag racing venues in six divisions throughout the United States and Canada. It's four major national series, Nitro Jam®, Thunder Jam®, Summit Pro-Am and Summit Super Series, have become immensely popular with the IHRA's 12,000 plus racing members. They also own and publish Drag Review Magazine®, a full color monthly magazine covering IHRA events and news.

We've been big fans of IHRA drag racing for many years. We attend many of their events, and we're lucky that there are great ones available to us in Texas. We're optimistic about the announced changes, and the reported focus on drag racing. It had been noted over the past several years that some of the organization's momentum had been lost to non-drag events such as Monster Jam. This may be a positive step to ensure that quality IHRA events continue.

The news owners have assumed all assets of the IHRA, including the sanctioning body itself, the four national series, and Drag Review Magazine.  Jason Rittenberry will serve as CEO of the IHRA. "Today is a landmark day for our Company, the ownership group and the IHRA. IHRA has shown that their entertainment business model is viable and the company can grow," he announced. "We want to build on the foundation that IHRA has built over the past 40 years and provide the structure and resources it needs to be successful long term in this new motorsports environment."

Aaron Polburn will serve as President & General Manager of IHRA Motorsports. It seems that the new owners are committed to keep drag racing at the forefront of activities for the IHRA. “This is a very exciting time for IHRA," he states. "We now have a team whose total focus is on IHRA, Nitro Jam® and Thunder Jam®. These are incredibly successful guys who will bring a unique vision along with the resources to grow all facets of our business. They are also 'car guys' who have a passion for all forms of motorsports. That is a combination that will serve us well in the coming years. This is a great time to be an IHRA fan, racer, sponsor or member track.”

Departing management head Charlie Mancuso, President of Feld Motor Sports, commented, “Our business has evolved to focus more on other Feld Motor Sports productions like Monster Jam® and Nuclear Cowboyz®, so we are pleased that IHRA’s new owners will be able to expand its offerings and maintain the high event quality for which the brand is known.”

Interest in Classic Car Rentals Explodes

Today the message has become clear. Interest in Classic Car Rentals is at an all-time high!

The most-read article of our blog is an article with a list of companies which offer Classic Car Rentals in Texas. We've noticed a dramatic increase over the last two to three months. We get callers almost daily now asking for referrals all across the country. Why this may be happening I can't say for sure, but it would seem logical with the tough economy many seeking the thrill of driving a terrific old classic car or truck are turning to rentals rather than making the big investment in owning one.

This is troubling news for many, and good news for others. Certainly the rental companies are happy -whether a privately owned vehicle which is rented out for weddings and special occasions, or larger shops that may have a half dozen or more antique cars and trucks, classic cars and/or muscle cars to offer up for short-term rentals.

The news for classic car dealers or consignment shops where they sell classic vehicles is probably more bleak, as it does signal a problematic slow-down with potential buyers. Basic economics have shown us that when "cash in" slows down, "cash out" does too.

This economy continues to trouble businesses that deliver discretionary products and services. Big-ticket toys and extravagances tend to be put on hold until people feel more secure about their jobs, cash flow, debts already carried, and a host of other factors. The trend towards renting over buying is indeed troubling.

But, these specialty automotive rentals can be hard to find. They're just not available everywhere. I found that out while researching my Texas list. That's why I want to help those who are looking for quality classic car rentals. Look for my upcoming list that expands out of Texas and across the country!

For those still interested in purchase over rental, Guy Algar states, "Don't lose hope. This can be an excellent time to pick up a great project while the market is down and some need to cash out. You might consider a restoration in stages, usually in the order: engine, performance, wheels and suspension, body, paint, trim and interior. Remember, you can drive your classic without a fresh coat of paint and a few blemishes, but you'll get nowhere fast without a well-running engine! Staging your fix up project can make your purchase possible, relieve a lot of stress and worry, and it sure helps the wallet. In the meantime, we're excited that the interest in classic cars, muscle cars and old cars and trucks in general is still alive and well, even if the playing-field has changed somewhat.

Original Batmobile Sold for $4.2 Million At Auction

You'd be hard-pressed to find a kid who grew up in the 60's who isn't familiar with TV's Batman & Robin. And, one of the coolest things was the Batmobile, which fired the imaginations of countless future motorheads and gearheads all around the country!

My wife Andrea and I got the opportunity to meet George Barris several years ago, and saw the original Batmobile up close and in person. It was like being taken back to my youth. What "wows" today is learning that even though the country is currently in one of the worst recessions in recent memory, this same car at the Barrett-Jackson auction last weekend drew an incredible $4.2 million!  I can think of dozens of "Holy _____ Batman" expressions that come to mind.

George Barris, who designed the iconic automobile, created a one-of-a-kind look for the the Caped Crusader and his side-kick Robin, played by Adam West and Burt Ward in the 1960's television version of the comic superhero Batman. The car, which started as a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car built by hand for $250,000, was transformed into every little boy's fantasy of what was cool, with futuristic features including the "Batphone" (long before cell phones were invented), and all sorts of gizmo's that helped the crime fighters save the day.

I read that George Barris was pleased with the auction results, as it sure drew a fantastic sale price. I am pleased that there is still such interest in these old cars that were such an important part of our childhood. Even though it's out of my budget, it's fun to keep our dreams alive!

Drama Over GM's Corvette Secrecy Reveals The Unexpected

We've all been waiting to see what the new 2014 Corvette would look like, and what it would have under the hood. What we didn't expect was to see the "Stingray" name resurrected!

 This is great news for traditional classic car lovers who saw the iconic 60's Corvette Stingray as the best of the Corvette's. Add "Stingray" to Corvette and you've got hearts thumping. Hoping to build on the successful relaunch of the Chevrolet Camaro, GM has surprised even industry experts who missed this prediction. Yes, the new 2014 C7 Corvette will be a Stingray.

While styling of the new Corvette does not closely resemble the incredibly popular Stingray models of the 1960's and early 1970's, it boasts modern features that should win over the hearts of enthusiasts. Among the changes are serious updates over the C6′s performance standard, with Corvette engineers looking to beat C6 Grand Sport lap times.

Under the hood, the new 6.2L LT1 V8 produces an estimated 450 horsepower and 450 foot-pound torque and times of 0-60 in under 4 seconds. All this while giving estimates of 26 MPG in fuel economy. The compact engine design lowers the hood line and also the vehicle's center of gravity for what should be terrific handling. Guy Algar states, "We're sure many will want to take advantage of an optional dry-sump oil system that will deliver through high g-force cornering." The base car weighs almost 100 pounds less than the C6 due to its aluminum frame that’s 57% stiffer than its predecessor. The base model has a carbon fiber hood and roof panels for reduced weight, and the hood and quarter panels feature functional extractor vents.

The new Stingray looks to be built for performance and fun. We took note of the stick shift mounted on the passenger side door armrest, and you can bet passenger's will be grabbing for it when testing out the performance that the new Corvette promises to deliver. Performance upgrades to the C6 Corvette include
steering, which is said to be 5 times stiffer for greater precision. The seven speed manual transmission should be a hoot to drive, with its "active rev-matching" system which automatically anticipates downshifts at the first touch of the lever. This rev match seamlessly synchronizes the engine revs to the selected ratio, giving faster shifts, better handling and providing greater stability.

We know that performance enthusiasts in Texas, including the classic car and classic sports car enthusiasts, will find resurrection of the "Stingray" name intriguing, and the described performance something that needs to be driven!

New Model Corvette C7 Creating Buzz With Announcement Of Live Reveal This Sunday

Many auto enthusiasts eagerly await the new year's models. This year is no exception. With a resurgence of interest in classic cars, and the fact that the major auto manufacturers have come out with updated versions of a few great muscle cars, it has left enthusiasts wondering if some models, such as the Z28 Camaro, the Cuda or the Superbee would be making a comeback. And, not to be left out of the mix, there has been a lot of buzz about the new model Corvette.

In fact, there has been so much interest surrounding the new 2014 C7 Corvette that GM has created months of mystery and intrigue by holding back the vital facts on the vehicle, and teasing us with the new logo for the new 2014 Corvette.

All this comes to and end with the announcement of a reveal via live-stream feed this Sunday, January 13, 2013. The event itself is the North American International Auto Show which will be held in Detroit.

Unexpected Thanks From A Stranded Traveler Affirms Why We Love Our Work With Old Cars And Trucks

I've always thought that many people have a big misunderstanding on why many of us get into the classic car line of work. While some may be motivated purely by ego, others by money, yet others have a far less sinister reason. They simply love the work, the people, and the "business".

You know what I'm talking about. There are a lot of shop owners and workers who want to be the next Boyd Coddington or Chip Foose. Some get into it simply to make a million dollars doing work they like, not necessarily thinking about the long hours, hard work, and frustration it can bring. And let's face it, shops have gotten a bad rap over decades because of people like this. Often these stereotypes portray rough, selfish, greedy men who just want to rip people off.

Luckily, not all classic car shop owners are among this crowd. We meet people all the time who genuinely love what they do and get enjoyment and fulfillment out of helping others achieve their life-long dream of owning a classic car, muscle car or vintage truck. Unfortunately, many get burned out or get tired of getting burned. When you're enthusiastic about what you do, it's nice to work with people who are as equally excited.

Yes, the road may be long and hard, but every now and then, you get a dose of "good" that makes every single thing you do feel worthwhile. Every effort to save someone a few dollars, give the job a little something extra, or go out of your way to make sure that the job is done right is important. It's nice when the hard work is appreciated because it helps keep our enthusiasm alive and working in overdrive!

What prompted me to think about this today was an on-line review written today from a very unexpected source. Earlier this summer, Guy Algar and I were working in our shop when we received a call from a driver on his cell phone who explained that while on a long road trip, their family vehicle was broken down on Rte 80 in Leesville, and could we help. Guy jumped into his truck, drove down to their location and brought them back. After determining what was wrong, I hopped into my car to drive the 25 minute drive to Gonzales to pick up the parts while Guy took out the broken part and prepped for the replacement. After making the necessary repairs and advising the family what would be needed in the future, we got them back on their long road trip. It felt great to be able to help, and we enjoyed the visit with the family, hoping they'd make the rest of their trip without incident.

Then, unexpectedly, we saw that all these months later they hadn't forgotten and had taken the time to write a nice review on merchantcircle.com. Here's what the review said:

We were surprised to find out there was one just a few miles from us down a country road called Motorheads. Guy came to our rescue! He got us back to his place, diagnosed the problems and helped us get a part from a local (15-20 miles away) parts store. Guy and I are grateful to all of our customers, no matter how small or large the job is. We are enthusiastic about the work we do because we love the work and the people we meet and make friends with. And it's nice when you make someone's life a bit more enjoyable.

The Smith family was such a nice "bump in the road" from our perspective. While we don't typically work on anything newer than a 1979 vehicle, they were in a bad spot. They desperately needed an immediate fix, we had the knowledge and ability, and we were happy to help get them back on the road. We could only wish the same if we were caught up in a bad situation. Guy and I thank them for the nice words. We, too, feel we met old friends that day.

People considering a classic car repair shop should look at the type of business they want to deal with, the relation they want with it, and the people who will be working hard to produce the car of their dreams for them. It's important to select a shop that has a good fit. Selecting someone with similar values and goals as yours is apt to make the best working relation, and produce the best outcomes for you.

GM Brings Camaro Production Back To The United States

General Motors announced today that it plans on returning production of the extremely popular Chevrolet Camaro muscle car back to the U.S.A. Motorheads Performance is extremely pleased that American car makers are taking these steps to revitalize and renew our car manufacturing.

Earlier this week, we learned that GM was buying back stock following the government's "bailout", repaying American citizens in the huge stock deal. Now we learn that production of the Camaro will be brought back from a Canadian plant in Ontario.

With news on the return of much needed manufacturing we can look forward to new jobs and a return of pride in manufacturing. The Lansing, Michigan factory will be the new home for the iconic Camaro.
